Rowing Experience
Joe began
rowing as a junior at Msgr. Bonner High School in 1978. He won several Novice 8 races in the Flicks
and the City Championship. As a senior
he rowed in the lightweight 8 finishing fifth place in both the
Stotesbury Cup Regatta and the SRAA Scholastic Championship.
He then rowed 4 years at Temple University,
his first year in the Freshman Heavyweight 8.
As a sophomore he was in the JV Heavyweight 8 winning both the Bergin
Cup and Kerr Cup JV 8 titles. The next
two years he was in the bow seat of Temples Varsity Heavyweight 8. In 1982 Temple won the Bergin and Kerr Cups
again and finished second in the Dad Vail Regatta. The next year they won all of their races
including Temple’s first Dad Vail Varsity 8 championship. That win earned Temple a trip to the
prestigious Royal Henley Regatta in England.
Joe also rowed during that summer at Crescent and moved to Vesper B.C.
in 1982 where he is still a member today.
While rowing at Vesper in the lightweight events he won many races and
medals including gold medals at the Canadian Henley in 1984. He also placed
gold in the Intermediate Lightweight 8 and Lightweight 4. In 1985 he also won gold at the National
Championships in the Senior Lightweight 8.
In 1984 he finished second in the Lightweight 8 at the Head of the
Charles. He was also invited to the
Lightweight National Team selection camp four times and in 1984 placed third in
the Lightweight 4 National Team Trials Regatta.
Coaching Experience
Joe began
coaching in 1984 at Harriton High school.
He coached the novices that year when the girls won the Novice 8 City
Championships and the boys were fifth in the Cities. Over the next three years as Head Coach the
girls earned a silver medal in the Senior 4 at Nationals in 1985. In 1986 the girls won a bronze medal in the
Jr.8 at Nationals. Then in his last year
with Harriton the boys Senior 4 won silver in the Stotesbury Cup and Gold at
Nationals. The girls Senior 4 won bronze
at both the Stotesbury Cup and Nationals.
Joe than went back to Temple to coach the Novice women for 3 yrs. He also coached the Novice men who finished
second in Freshman/Novice 8 race at the Dad Vail Regatta.
After a three year hiatus from coaching Joe
coached the juniors at Vesper. That
first year back in 1994 the boys won the Junior 4 at the Canadian Henley.
From 1995 to the present Joe has been with
several teams helping to get them started.
He was with Archbishop Prendergast for three years, Radnor for one year
and then helped start several teams with the support of Vesper Boat Club. Three of the schools Moorestown
High School, Sacred Heart and Friends Select are now school-sponsored teams.
